THIS ISSUE: Minors On Campus

Features Concurrent Student Enrollment
Ed Myers, Ph.D.

Since legislation changed in 1996, many community colleges have experienced a rise in the number of high school students seeking enrollment in both academic institutions – referred to as concurrent enrollment. These students bring with them a host of issues and potential problems for faculty and staff at the colleges. Dr. Ed Myers presents an overview on this topic and discusses the approach used by West Valley College to develop policies and procedures to address all concerns. Included with this article is a copy of the information provided to the community colleges from the California State Chancellor’s Office on “Admission of Minors to Community Colleges.” Additionally, you will find copies of the forms used for admission of minors to West Valley College. These forms are provided for other colleges to use and adapt as necessary to meet their institutional needs.

Serving Minors in Student Health: A Unique Challenge
Marilyn Dickson

Medical treatment of minors, persons under 18 years of age, requires consent of a parent or guardian. While this sounds clear cut, with or without consent, health services often finds itself in the position of making judgment calls regarding treatment and services.

In this article, Marilyn Dickson provides an overview of regulations and procedures related to treating minors. Additionally, she shares a few examples of situations that often fall into a grey area. Health Centers routinely deal with issues related to the health and safety of students and the college. Being aware of and planning for some of the unique challenges outlined in this article is sound prevention.

Concurrent High School Enrollment Program:
Tracking Subsequent College Matriculation and Persistence
Summer 1999 - Spring 2002
John Sewart, Ph.D.

There is very little research data available on students concurrently enrolled in high school and college. This is starting to change as college researchers undertake studies on this cohort. How many students participating in Concurrent Enrollment Programs enroll at the college after high school graduation? And of these, how many are retained the next semester? Dr. Seward examined these two questions and the results are reported in this article.

Resource Links: Creating an Accessible On-line Environment
Laurie Vasquez
Historically, access has been a primary mission of community colleges in California. Access is related to cost of education, availability of instructional programs, and support through appropriate services and resources. The past few years, a challenge to access has arisen in the areas of distance learning and on-line support services. This challenge is to insure access to students with disabilities. Laurie Vasquez provides links to information, tools, and resources for faculty and staff to use as they develop materials for the web.
