This two-day workshop will address both the theory and practice of working with students with basic skills needs that all faculty can immediately apply to their classes. Day one will involve an exploration into the latest scientific research on learning and tutoring in techniques that enhance the ability of all students to learn. Active learning and hands-on exercises will allow provide opportunities to put into practice all that is discussed. Day two will introduce participants to the misconceptions about students with basic skills needs. The multiple ways to integrate contextualized teaching and learning will be discussed. The participants will work in teams made up of basic skills and CTE faculty and discuss the barriers that they may face and the opportunities available at their campuses. Contextualized lessons will be presented and critiqued. Teams will rate the presenter and develop their own teaching presentations. Do you know that, although entry and exit skills, competencies, and proficiency skills have been defined for college level courses in English and math and critical thinking, there are no comparable definitions for basic skills level courses? Yet the California state legislature has demanded that we report student success rates in basic skills courses to maintain our funding each year. But what do those success rates really mean? What skills do students achieve at each level of basic skills? November 5- 8, 2008--NASPA Western Regional Conference: Renaissance Hotel, Long Beach, CA.
