Do you know that, although entry and exit skills, competencies, and proficiency skills have been defined for college level courses in English and math and critical thinking, there are no comparable definitions for basic skills level courses? Yet the California state legislature has demanded that we report student success rates in basic skills courses to maintain our funding each year. But what do those success rates really mean? What skills do students achieve at each level of basic skills?
